Faith in America

Den republikanske presidentkandidaten Mitt Romney har sedan en tid utlovat ett tal om sin tro. En bidragande anledning till detta är att Romney är mormon. Detta bemöts med djup skepcis av den evangelikala högern i USA, en grupp som ingen republikansk presidentkandidat kan negligera. Talet var inte minst av denna anledning högintressant. Hur personlig skulle Romney bli med sin tro? Hur skulle han framställa sin mormonism i förhållande till evangelikal kristen tro? I vilken utsträckning skulle han tillstå att hans religiösa övetygelser påverkade hans politiska agerande?

I torsdags fick vi svaret!

Intressant och avslöjande för innehållet i talat är rubriken Romney valde för sitt anförande: Faith in America.
"Let me assure you that no authorities of my church, or of any other church for that matter, will ever exert influence on presidential decisions. Their authority is theirs, within the province of church affairs, and it ends where the affairs of the nation begin."

Jag vet inte om jag skall skratta eller gråta. Sällan har man väl skådat ett tydligare uttryck för den gnostiska dualism som genom sitt nästan schitzofrena förhållningsätt skiljer den "religiösa sfären" från den "offentliga sfären".

Men, men, om syftet med talet var att undanröja alla tvivel om att Romney skule vara någon sorts religiös fanatiker som låter sina religiösa övertygelser få konsekvenser för hans liv och handlande, så får väl talet anses som lyckosamt.

Det lustiga i sammanhanget är att det alldeles säkert finns mormoner som efter att hört talet stolt utbrustit: "Se där, det går visst att vara mormon och president. Vilken framgång för mormonismen att vi har en presidentkandidat".
På samma sätt som miljoner katoliker i USA var stolta när JFK valdes till landets första icke-protestantiska president. Stolta, trots att JFK i valrörelsen lovat att hans katolicism inte skulle påverka hans politik.

Även Tony Blair erkände ju nyligen att han, under sin tid som premiärminister, avstod från att tala om sin tro. Detta då han inte ville riskera att uppfattas som en "nutter".

I Sverige har vi ju försvarsminister Tolgfors som exempel på trons privatisering i politiken.

James K.A. Smith skriver i en klok blogpost om sina tankar omkring innehållet i Romneys tal, som han ser som ett uttryck för vad han kallar USA:s statsreligion "Americanism".

"Indeed, “freedom” and “liberty” are the mantras of this faith, and Romney’s speech invokes these shibboleths no less than thirty times (God or “the Creator” or “divine author” comes in at a close second with 21 references). And Romney doesn’t fail to allude to the great artifacts of this religion. Americanism has its own sacred documents (the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution), its own saints (“the Founding Fathers”), and has even birthed its own cathedrals and grottos (just stroll the National Mall).

"But I hope Mr. Romney and his culture warrior friends (whether on the Right or Left) won’t be surprised if some of us find it hard to believe in Americanism and its God of liberty. Some of us just can’t muster faith in the generic theism that is preached on the campaign trail, whether from the Right or Left. Some of us Christians have a hard time reconciling the Almighty, all-powerful, law-giving God of liberty with the crucified suffering servant born in a barn and executed at the hands of the elite. Some of us are trying to figure out what it means to be a people who follow one who relinquished his rights rather than asserted them, who considered submission a higher value than freedom. We serve a God-man who wasn’t concerned with “preserving leadership” and the hegemony of the empire’s gospel of freedom, but rather was crushed by its machinations for proclaiming and embodying another gospel."
