Slut på harpspelandet

Läs Times intervju med N.T Wright som rör pop-kristendomens vanföreställningar om himlen och livet efter detta.

"Never at any point do the Gospels or Paul say Jesus has been raised, therefore we are we are all going to heaven. They all say, Jesus is raised, therefore the new creation has begun, and we have a job to do."

"What the New Testament really says is God wants you to be a renewed human being helping him to renew his creation, and his resurrection was the opening bell. And when he returns to fulfil the plan, you won't be going up there to him, he'll be coming down here."

Således goda nyheter för alla oss som inte direkt attraherades av tanken att sitta på ett moln och spela harpa i evigheten!

Heaven - not the end of the world!

Jag har snöat in på den anglikanske biskopen N.T Wright (Yes, han som ser ut som Toby Ziegler).

Jag älskar hur han sticker hål på föreställningen om att poängen med kristen tro skulle vara att "få komma till himlen när man dör". Allt för ofta har kristen tro reducerat "vårt jordiska liv" till en transportsträcka; en världsfrånvänd väntan på att det "riktiga livet i himlen" skall börja. Detta tänkande, som ofta motiverats med att ”jorden ju ändå skall förgås”, får dock konsekvenser för hur man ser på skapelsen, på betydelsen av våra handlingar här och nu, och så vidare.

Mot detta synsätt ställer N.T Wright bibelns tal om den nya skapelsen; att Gud en dag skall göra allting nytt och befria skapelsen från sitt slaveri.

“A religion that forgets about new creation may feel some sympathy for the battered and bedraggled figure in the ditch, but its message to him will always be that though we can help him a bit, ultimately it doesn’t matter because the main thing is to escape this wicked world altogether. And that represents a tragic diminishing and distortion of what Christian faith is all about.”

Bibelns sista bok slutar inte med att de frälstas skara får åka till himmelen, utan med att det nya Jerusalem kommer ner från himmelen till jorden; med att himmel och jorden bli ett.

“Heaven is important, but it’s not the end of the world; God will make new heavens and new earth, and give us new bodies to live and work and take delight in his new creation. And the ‘good news’ of the Christian gospel is that this new world, this new creation, has already begun: it began when Jesus of Nazareth rose from the dead on Easter morning, having faced and beaten the double enemy, sin and death, that has corrupted and defaced God’s lovely creation.”

Bönen Fader vår får liksom en annan innebörd med detta perspektiv: Tillkomme ditt rike; ske din vilja, såsom i himmelen, så ock på jorden.
