Trohet till vems kungarike?

På tal om identitet och lojalitet ...
Det rapporteras i media om en brittisk regeringsrapport på temat medborgarskap, som bland annat föreslår att skolelever skall svära trohetssed till drottning och fosterland.

Mannen bakom rapporten, Lord Goldsmith, säger:
"Certainly there isn't a crisis of national identity, but the research does tend to show there's been a diminution in national pride, in this sense of belonging."

Simon Barrow på den anabaptistiska tankesmedjan Ekklesia förklarar nedan varför han som kristen motsätter sig Lord Goldsmiths förslag. Läs (i sin helhet) och njut:

"... as a Christian, my primary loyalty is established and defined for me by the rite of baptism, through which I am joined to a new kind of community: one forged on the basis of the suffering solidarity embodied in the crucifixion of Christ and in the gift of risen life beyond-all-limits. This community holds out a vision of restored relationships created by the imagio Dei - which, in essence, means that no human institution or formation (no race, class, gender, or state, say) should compromise the freedom and equality made available to all people through their origin and destiny in God."

"I certainly don't expect the state to support, privilege or subsidize my Christian commitment, but I am equally clear that my final loyalty is not to any state, and that if a government (or corporation or political movement) acts unjustly, wages war indiscriminately or seeks to get me to kill in its name, I am bound to say "no".

Den liberala nationalstaten, som ju betecknas som sekulär, har dock alltid krävt sina offer till nationalismens altare. Nationalistiska riter i form av hymner, flaggor och militärparader är några exempel på sådana offer. Att svära trohetsed är ytterligare ett.

God damn America?

Senator Obama har hamnat i blåsväder sedan hans pastor sedan 20 år tillbaka, Rev. Jeremiah Wright i Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, uppmärksammats för ett par (i USA) kontroversiella uttalanden.

Han lär bland annat ha sagt att svarta amerikaner borde sjunga God Damn America, istället för God bless America:

"The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strike law and then wants us to sing 'God Bless America.' No, no, no, God damn America, that's in the Bible for killing innocent people," he said in a 2003 sermon. "God damn America for treating our citizens as less than human. God damn America for as long as she acts like she is God and she is supreme."

Om detta uttalande finns det ju en hel del att säga. Jag finner dock Obamas egna ord om uppståndelsen där han tar avstånd från Rev. Wrights uttalanden, intressantare:

"I categorically denounce any statement that disparages our great country or serves to divide us from our allies."

Ett tydligare exempel på konflikten mellan nationalism och kristen tro får man leta efter. Med ett sådant uttalande bekänner ju Obama i någon mening färg, och visar var hans verkliga identitet och lojalitet ligger. Obama säger sig alltså kategoriskt fördöma varje uttalande som nedvärderar USA. Ouch! Som jag ser det säger ett sådant uttalande dessvärre en hel del om djupet i den kristna identiteten.

Men även Rev. Jeremiah Wrights uttalanden väcker ju en del frågor om vilken som är hans primära identitet, den som svart, eller den som kristen.

På församlingens websida kan man läsa:
"We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian... Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain "true to our native land," the mother continent, the cradle of civilization."

Ur ett kristet perspektiv måste väl frågan bli vad som avses med deras "true to our native land", eller med andra ord, hur Guds rike förhåller sig till Afrika?

Detta kan kanske för någon tyckas som ordmärkeri eller blott semantik, men uttalanden som att "the United States of America is and always will be the last best hope on Earth", måste ses som oförenliga med kristen tro.

Jag tror att vi som är kristna behöver hjälpa varandra att peka ut var våra gentemot Kristus konkurrerande lojaliteter ligger, och samtala om kring vad vi bygger vår identitet.
