Gnosticism für alle!

Just när man trodde att framgångsteologins cyniska röst hade tystnat, då återuppstår den som eftermiddags-tv. Denna gång är det underhållningsindustrins mäktigaste kvinna som orkestrerar evangelisationen av självförverkligandets budskap till varenda hemmafru i Nordamerika. Genom en trailer som tycks vara producerad av samma bolag som gjorde Da Vinci-koden berättas historien om hur den sanna nyckeln till framgång har gömts och förtryckts av mäktiga institutioner (läs kyrkan). Men, Oprah, denna ljusets apostel, står nu beredd att avslöja konspirationen och ge oss den oförvanskade Sanningen för bara $ 4.95.

Oprah’s senaste satsning; The Secret lovar ett bättre och mer framgångsrikt liv för oss alla! En tillvaro präglad av lycka, hälsa och framgång, eller som speakern I trailern säger: You can Have, Do, or Be, anything you want! Allt som verkar behövas är viljekraft och positivt tänkande.

Jag kommer att tänka på en passage ur Ralph C. Woods essä om P.D James bioaktuella The Children Of Men (som jag tidigare skrivit om här):

”Far more successful is a God-huckster from Alabama named Rosie McClure. She thrives as a televangelist because, as Faron cynically puts it, salvation is "a commodity which is always in demand and which costs [her] nothing to supply." The Reverend Ms. McClure preaches a crossless, Christless, evil-denying gospel whose theme tune is the Beatles' song, "All You Need Is Love." Her congregations sing "cheerful choruses"; they also "laugh, cry, [and] fling their arms like demented marionettes." Rosie the gospeller does not proclaim one Lord and one faith and one baptism, but rather one Love. "No one need feel deprived of a love object," she announces. "It needn't be a human being; it can be an animal-a cat, a dog; it can be a garden; it can be a flower; it can be a tree. The whole natural world is one, linked by love, upheld by love, redeemed by love." To this litany of all-sufficient love, the unbelieving Faron makes his withering response: "One would suppose that Rosie had never seen a cat with a mouse."

John Stackhouse har mer ingående kommenterat The Secret’s teologiska problematik på sin blogg. Hans brännade kritik av Oprah's evengelium sammanfattas kanske bäst av en fråga:
Hur predikar man Oprah’s evangelium till prostituerade missbrukare i slummen? eller Vad har The Secret att säga till de fattiga och utslagna på samhällets botten? Tänk positivt!?!

Den skarpaste udden är i Stackhouse inlägg dock riktad mot kristenheten:
”But lots of people embrace The Secret, I daresay, because they want hope, and power for living, and freedom from the past, and forgiveness–and where else can they get that?
Where else, indeed? “
